The end is in sight, but we still have time to add details and make fixes!

Your attention to doing your part the best you can will really make our show shine.
Thank you for your input and concerns. All will be addressed.

Special help in the following areas will make everyone's life a little smoother:

- No extra folks in the dressing rooms. There just isn't room and it isn't good theater etiquette
.
- Take responsibility for getting and putting away your props.

- Backstage noise is OUT OF CONTROL! Please - we can't have ANY chatting. The orchestra and the audience can hear you. The orchestra is actually having trouble hearing cues. Both the cast and crew are offenders!

-Don't clog up the hallways and traffic paths backstage... think about where you are all the time. Crew members must return to their "stations" when not actively performing a task.

- If you have a solo, please take a moment to review the lyrics as written. Even if you have them memorized.

- Remember to stay in character on stage, even if something isn't going quite as planned. Do not smile unless it is part of your role and you are reacting to something funny which is part of the play! Have fun... but don't smile at the wrong time.

******************
Victor Hugo stopped by to see the set and get flyers! He's fully on
board and is growing his beard and personalizing his script. Chrissie
is helping him work his character.

There are already 50 Gala tickets sold. Please push again - every single ticket helps.

Keep in mind that $75 for dinner with wine and dessert, plus a top-quality show is a pretty good deal! In addition, it's a tax-deductible donation to a great cause... If you haven't asked someone to buy a ticket, please consider your belief in the value of keeping the performing arts accessible to all.

Thank you for all your hard work.

Peter and Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07566442277096723222noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1039364854227956698.post-58241902394140974022013-10-20T14:31:00.000-07:002013-10-20T14:31:00.263-07:00Status For YOUStuff to check out
- The Performance Schedule has been updated to match the office schedule.
- We have a week until the Costume parade (which is where we check all the costumes) so if you have not communicated with Terri the Costume Queen, you need to.
- Kathleen Mini and Tori Kientz will be setting up hair and makeup models for each acting group - The Poor, The Students, The Prostitutes, etc. Be ready to follow their guidance!
- Your attendance at set rehearsals is more vital than ever!
- You should be long past knowing your cues, entrances, lyrics and multiplication tables. review them daily until automatic!
- If you are unsure of any music, ask for assistance - no more waiting!

THANK YOU
THANK YOU
THANK YOU

Oh yeah - invite your peeps to the Gala (November 23) we need each person to sell two tickets minimum!
Love you!
We can't get complacent but the set construction, sound equipment installation, lighting design and installation, prop gathering, costume creation, etc. are all coming along reasonably well. Please give us what time you can to help with the set and the costumes over the next 2 weeks. Some cast members have not helped with construction and costumes at all. If this is you, please help us out.

Some major challenges remain:

1. Several ensemble members are still struggling with their lyrics and pick-ups. If you are struggling with knowing your lyrics and when you sing them you need to PRACTICE AND REVIEW ON YOUR OWN before every rehearsal from now on. We have too much to do to be held up because your are not practicing outside of full-cast rehearsals. Please don't let yourself and the rest of the cast down!

2. Everyone, ensemble and leads, should take some time and review your lyrics. Your goal should be 100% accuracy. We surely don't want to settle for "I was close." Some of you are quite skilled at "free-style-made-up lyrics" and "on-the-fly-harmonies." I am not trying to insult anyone or diminish how hard you have worked but not singing the lyrics as written causes problems for those that have to sing with, along, and after you! An easy way to check yourself is to ask fellow cast members what they are hearing from you.

3. Now that we have had a few rehearsals on the set we will begin adding and firmly setting much more business and characterization for everyone. In all rehearsals now, even if I have seemingly ignored you, please remember why your character is in a scene and what your character wants from the others on stage with you.

4. The next few rehearsals with the orchestra are likely to be challenging as we continue to set tempos, lengths of vamps, lead-ins, cut-offs, scene change cues, etc. As we rehearse with the orchestra, please remember that the CONDUCTOR SETS THE TEMPO FOR THE VOCALISTS... NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND. There are some portions of songs where the conductor will guide the orchestra to follow a vocalist- but these are in very specific places which will be set by the conductor during rehearsals. PLAN TO SING WITH THE ORCHESTRA AS IF YOU WERE SINGING WITH A CD AS YOUR BACK-UP. YOU MUST ADJUST YOUR SINGING TO THE TEMPO OF THE ORCHESTRA AND YOU MUST LISTEN CAREFULLY TO THE ORCHESTRA AS YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SEE THE CONDUCTOR.

5. 100% ATTENDANCE IS CRITICAL NOW TO THE SUCCESS OF THE SHOW. Those continuing to miss rehearsals are likely to be removed from the scenes they miss. Of course there are emergencies, work and life "issues" that come up, but you must keep me informed. If you can't reach me or Dan Snow (Stage Manager) in advance, make sure someone else (1) tells me why you are missing, and (2) is prepared to take notes for you. Some of the children in the cast, and some adults as well, have missed many rehearsals and should miss no more... their participation while continuing to miss so many rehearsals would be very unfair to those who have been committed, serious, and responsible about the rehearsal process.

6. THOSE CAST MEMBERS WHO HAVE NOT COMPLETED THEIR CHARACTER SHEETS FOR THE DRAMA COACH (Chrissie) MUST DO SO BY NOVEMBER 1ST. If you choose not to complete this task you will not be performing to your full potential. The reason for this requirement is really quite simple... If your character does not have a "history" as described in your character sheet you, as a character in a story, can't know why your character is in a scene, how you got there, why you are there, and what you want by being there.

7. The rehearsals noted on your schedule as "To be announced" are going to be used for rehearsals. Please don't make plans for those dates. I will let you know the specifics for those dates as soon as I can.

Thanks for still dreaming the dream!
PeterPeter and Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07566442277096723222noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1039364854227956698.post-7509080427911657912013-10-07T12:31:00.001-07:002013-10-07T12:58:17.204-07:00At the End of the Day...WOW!

Okay Everybody, Here's where we are:

SET

Is it massive, or what?
We have an abstract of the slums with broken building frame works and makeshift hovels that might have been thrown together as shelters for the street people. With the amazing lighting effects, the huge structures will represent each of our scenes for the prison, countryside, streets of Paris, red-light dock district, and even the wedding backdrop.

Remaining to be built: the 16-foot turntable and floor ramps, the orchestra platform flooring and front wall (thank you to Adam Clark for his framing work!)

With painting, finish work and dressing, it will be a working work of art!

Please alert Dan if you notice ANY safety issues or anything that needs repair. Nothing is ever more important at IT than the safety of any participants or audience members.

SOUND

The sound for this show is receiving more attention that any show we have ever produced. Peter ordered lots of area mics which were put to great use at the party on Saturday night. Sound issues were carefully reviewed at the tech meeting on Friday afternoon. Welcome aboard to our sound booth operator, Marrissa Berry! Marc Bonham has identifed the wireless mics we will need and is planning the sound check process.

DRESSING ROOMS

Peter and his strapping minions, Beau and Ryan Hamilton have built two new dressing rooms and started a third in the lobby. We plan to be renting the Organ Room next door for our Actors' Green Room. The staircase under the orchestra mezzanine has been removed for additional space backstage, and the rear theater doors will be accessible for a covered actors' exit back to the dressing and green room area. Our Stage Manager, Dan Snow will be designing a pattern for backstage movement that everyone will follow to manage confusion with entrances and exits and to minimize backstage noise.

HAIR and MAKEUP

Kathleen Mini and Tori Kientz will be carrying out evil hair and makeup designs on the cast. We plan to give each person a photo of their approved style to recreate for each performance. Plan on dirt and dirt removal. We will be working a plan to minimize dressing room congestion before the show by having folks get their initial makeup on before arriving, if possible. Stay tuned!

COSTUMES

Terri and her henchmen/henchwomen are flying! Thank you to everyone for your cooperation and kindness to our award-winning Costume Queen. For an idea of the undertaking, she is designing and causing to exist costumes for 69 actors, many of whom have multiple changes. Please check with Terri's schedule for fittings and be sure to bring any items she has asked for. If you have questions, ASK!

At this point, everyone should have their own boots or other approved shoes and should be wearing them at the rest of the rehearsals. Bring them and make sure they are approved by Terri or Peter. You will need to practice in them and identify any adjustments - don't be miserable for 20 performances! This is especially important if you have a dance scene or if you climb the towers...you should also start practicing in your skirts or any cumbersome costume items that your role requires...

About costumes:
The Main Thing is that YOU are responsible for your costume items and they do not belong to you. We will take photos of you in your costumes at the costume parade in the theater and you are responsible to look the same as the photo when you appear onstage.

1) Many of them are rented, and all of them required a volunteer to make them. Please use them with care. Always hang them up immediately after use. Costumes lying on the floor is one of our leading causes of death at the theater.
2) When we start dress rehearsals, Terri will advise the cast on weekly cleaning requirements for costumes. We do not eat or drink anything but water while wearing a costume. Bring a bib to drape over yourself if you need to!
3) If any costume item that has been given to you requires repair, write a note for Terri ASAP. We will need a few folks available for repairs during the run - so volunteer now!

PROPS

"Prop" is short for "Property" and refers to any item that is touched, carried, used or referenced by a character on stage. Items on stage that are not otherwise used or talked about by the actors are actually called Set Dressing. The difference is that while Set Dressing adds richness and completes a scene artistically, if it's missing the actors don't really look like idiots. If a prop is missing, the actor is stuck making up a reason why or miming its use. Which can create anxiety and throw off performances, etc. And gives Peter gray hair. Yes, even more.

Peter is renting some of the more realistic muskets for our heroic (however misguided) students. (He is so excited!) GUNS!
Adeline Penn and Laura Bonham have been gathering, gathering gathering! Thank you!
Please start using your props in rehearsal from now on.

Three main things to know about props:
1) ALWAYS return props to exactly where you got them as soon as you leave the stage. Every time. Always.
2) If a prop is not working or needs repair, tell the stage manager (DAN) as soon as possible - but still return it to its little home first.
3) NEVER, ever, ever remove, move, play with, or otherwise touch a prop that is not intended for your use. Not even a little bit. (Hint: if your excuse starts with "I was just...." then you are breaking this rule.)

If you are unsure of an issue or question regarding a prop, the answer is DON'T DO IT. Ask the property manager or the stage manager when in doubt. For further guidance, think of how it might feel to be walking on stage in front of a full house without your prop - drinking from a cup that isn't there, shooting an imaginary rifle, sweeping without a broom, etc.

LIGHTS

Dave Patrick, our award-winning lighting designer is ready to get to work.
Peter has ordered our gobos (like transparencies) that will shine on the curtain to show the Les Miserables logo and then the dates and city titles at the scene changes. It should help provide a reference for the audience and it will be cool! We have some special effects lights for water shimmer and for the ghost images. It's coming along. We will evaluate hair and makeup under the final lighting set ups as well.

PROGRAMS and ADVERTISING

We need a few folks to get program ads. If your place of work is a potential advertiser, we want to talk to you! Business-card size ads are $50. Half-page size is $150 and full-page is $200.
Anyone is welcome to put in an ad to recognize their cast member or to congratulate the cast and crew personally, as well. Give a jpg file and check to IT! to Nancy in the office.
In addition, if your place of business would make a donation, we can also recognize them in the program with a thank you as a sponsor. All donations help - so please consider.

It's time to advertise the show, so put a notice in your newsletters and FaceBook pages. We are printing fliers and posters for distribution. We need people for the poster blitz as well.

It brought a tear to the director's eye.

Thank you to all who worked so hard organizing costumes, props and moving heavy set pieces. The kids moved lots of materials and folded drop cloths and put stuff away! Onward!

Les Miserables Cast asked to help with the Deathtrap Strike and the Les Miserables Set Load-in on Sunday, September 29th at 4:15pm.

We are asking the entire Les Miserables cast and crew (including children) and their families to assist in the strike of Deathtrap and the initial load-in of the Les Miserables set pieces. If the whole cast can help the entire effort should take no more than 2 hours. The Deathtrap Strike will involve taking down the scenery walls, removing the furniture and props from the stage, and taking down the lights. The Les Miserables Load-in will involve moving the towers, the barricade, the furniture, etc. into the building and on to the stage. Please bring screw guns and gloves.

Completing the Les Miserables load-in on Sunday will allow us to start putting the turntable together on Monday morning.
PLEASE PLAN ON ATTENDING.
The Act I review is cancelled.
Come see Deathtrap at the theater since you have the night free! Peter and Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07566442277096723222noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1039364854227956698.post-25599240344673826712013-09-03T11:34:00.002-07:002013-09-03T11:34:52.404-07:00Lovely Links Going for a SongAll Singers Should Sing!

On your Labor Day week-long break, please sing your parts every day. Many of our successful cast members have mentioned that they practice in the car.

You will see above that there is a new page of "Singers' Resources" that provides links to the all songs with chorus parts and ensemble solos. Please take the time to sing with the recordings every day.
Listen to the music for your cues. Did I mention every day?

These recording clips match our vocal score. They are YouTube links and can be copied or downloaded and burned to CD if you prefer. Save the links on your smart phone and then you can review them wherever you have wireless access. If none of this works for you, we can make a CD copy of your songs from the computer at the theater from iTunes.

Also- We have some music-savvy cast members who are willing to help you. Cindy Nelson and Ali Lavanway are experienced musicians and singers who can meet with you if you talk with them and make arrangements. Perhaps a half hour before rehearsal one day soon.... If you admire a fellow cast member's singing, ask him or her to practice with you in the other room during a break or down time between your parts.

The ball is in your court! The Barricade is on your lawn.

All it takes is practice and confidence that comes with practice- but you do have to practice the entrances, timing and notes correctly. Every Day. Really.

there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes.

This production is keeping some busy people EXTRA busy:

Lanny is scurrying all over town getting sponsors for the show. He and Peter have got about 25 percent of the expenses covered in just a couple of weeks

Susan Dockter and Jeannette Boltz are planning a Les Mis Grand Preview Gala for raising a significant portion of the cost of the show. Saturday, November 23rd - Black Tie.

Chrissie has got a full schedule of meetings with leads for character development.

Jeff Nelson has been burning up the Internet with emails and announcements as he acquires the last few instruments for the orchestra. Music scores will arrive from the licensing agent any day now!

Peter has been building the Garden Gate and the cart for the Cart Crash. And staying up nights.

Lots of folks have helped with set building - Dan Snow, Bob Steel, Lanny, Dave Thomas, John Dockter, Erika Maruri, Kate Barba, Jeff & Jennifer Jackson, Barb & Charlize Garaygay, Kim & Kelsi Havercroft, Ned Heaney, Tami & Erina & Bella Brida, Michelle & Barry & Trinity & Taryn Harwell, Tim Chapman, Steven Kliner....probably more...

Terri Thomas has been buying fabric at every garage sale and secondhand store- and then going home and dyeing it! She's assembled a group to help with over 70 costumes. She has Regina Drennan, Holly Salvestrin, Erika Maruri, Chrissie, Ali LaVanway, Susan Felton, Christine Kiekhaefer, and Carol Cramer feverishly repairing, ironing, cutting, sewing and organizing.

Afton has been showing us (and re-showing us) her dance moves - our production is going to be so much richer for her enhancements through choreography.

Marc Bonham has been working on the sound design with Peter.

Dale has Reviewed and revised the vocal rehearsal schedule and has started attending every rehearsal to assist with any song issues.

And, our Guardian Angel, Nancy Christeson has been working the ticket sales with our on-line rep Brown Paper Tickets...

What we need you to do:

Note the extra performance set for the Gala preview, November 23rd. This will be a very important night for the production and for the theater- as we will raise most of the funds for the show. Details to follow...

Tell your family and friends to buy tickets. As we make fliers available, please post them wherever you have access to a bulletin board, newsletter, or any advertising venue.

We need sponsors - if you can get us an audience with your employer (see Peter) or get an ad in the program (see Nancy), it will help tremendously. 15 ads can pay for the whole program. Let's talk. We can also put in ads from well-wishers. A business-card size JPG file is $40 - email Nancy at the office.

Plan on being at the August 16th fund raiser at the theater to perform One Day More. Also bring a donor. Please let Peter know ASAP if you can't be at that performance.

Please practice your singing EVERY DAY! Ask your ensemble leaders, Dale, Peter, Chrissie, or Afton for help if you need it.

Hold the Barricade.

Also, double-check your rehearsal dates on this page each week for any adjustments.
You are looking and sounding better and better - it is fun to listen to and watch.

Thank you, thank you!Peter and Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07566442277096723222noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1039364854227956698.post-35158499478772509562013-07-26T08:18:00.000-07:002013-07-26T10:23:36.532-07:00From the DirectorOur set is about 75% complete.
Please check the new Props page to see if you can help with acquiring any of the needed items.

Everyone should be off-book (have your lines and cues memorized) by September 8th.

Please practice your singing with the symphonic recording at home or in the car a couple of times a week at least. If you don't have a copy, the youTube link is under "Cool Stuff" from the BulletinBoard page.

Ask for help if you need it.
Fill out your character page and turn in to Chrissie.

Men folk:
for the early 1800's period, men should have long hair. If possible, please start letting your hair grow wild!

Thank you for your attention to detail, and for your hard work on the show.
Your input and questions are welcome - leave me an index card for quickest response.
Rehearsals

During the past week, we have had several rehearsals with large groups that have shaped and advanced our progress toward our goal for a professional-quality show. At this point, our larger rehearsals are serving the purpose of blocking in the size and form of each scene and giving everyone a timeframe for scene transitions. As we progress, we will add more detail and polish.

In advance of each rehearsal, please review the scene, song list, and rehearsal group scheduled to determine if your presence is required. If in doubt, contact someone in your group or your Ensemble Leader. From now on, we will be re-posting that information at the door, along with a sign-in sheet. Hopefully this will help people to determine whether they are involved.

From now on:
1) Ensemble actors should have at least their lyrics and cues memorized for rehearsal.
2) Missing rehearsals may result in solo parts being re-assigned.

Challenges

With the decision to develop such a large cast, we have the privilege of creating an opportunity for all of us to experience this show as a significant event in our community. Of course we wanted to share the experience with as many of our IT! family as possible. At the same time, having such a large cast creates a new set of challenges that we must all be aware of and accept.

For the Director, in addition to overseeing every area of the production, there is the challenge of creating a picture in each scene that advances the story and presents a coherent image to the audience. Audience experience is the first motivation for directing decisions.

For the Producer, there is the challenge of managing the administration, finances, facility, publicity and community relations that are required for a such a production. Each of these areas is magnified in comparison with other shows IT! produces.

Our Vocal Director must train many relatively inexperienced singers to learn and practice their music correctly.

For the Sound Designer, the challenges are many. We must come up with additional microphones, help actors with projection, minimize noise, train a technician to run the levels, and pull a rabbit out of a hat within our budget!

For the Stage Manager, one challenge is tracking 70 actors for rehearsals and scene assignments. Another is going to be choreographing huge scene changes in a timely manner around a backstage crowd in the dark, in silence.

Our Conductor is still seeking certain skilled musicians who are willing to work as volunteers for a huge commitment. And still waiting for orchestra scores that are due sometime in August.

Our Costume Designer must track characters and actors through scene changes, in addition to coming up with costumes for 70 actors (many of whom have more than one) and finding seamstresses.

The Drama Coach is feverishly working on character development that each actor must have in mind, as well as helping with accents and scheduling time for individual coaching.

With the process of rehearsing large groups who are usually not all on stage at the same time, the Actors have the challenge of coming to the theater and watching and waiting and then taking the stage for short amounts of time and then watching and waiting some more. In addition, because of the nature of the opera, the actors must all practice singing regularly; as relatively inexperienced singers, the voices must be strengthened by singing, singing, singing.

WHEW!

While some are grumbling, most are cheerfully enjoying their time at the theater, or using their waiting around time to catch up on reading and socializing. When you find yourself waiting, grab a fellow actor and practice your scene in another room!

Keep in mind the way it sounded last weekend when everyone sang the end
of "One Day More" - it was powerful and made it all feel worth-while!
Be assured that we are on track and by each of us doing our best, we can all have
confidence in a terrific production.

Notices

Please ask for help if your area is overwhelming you. Please offer to help if by some chance you are underwhelmed!

June 23, Sunday - Blocking Rehearsal is rescheduled for Wednesday, July 10

Please re-check and post any schedule conflicts and we will try to accommodate.
We appreciate your calendar adjustments!Peter and Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07566442277096723222noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1039364854227956698.post-43035129153146488552013-05-22T18:01:00.000-07:002013-05-22T18:01:23.876-07:00Music ScoresAs many have commented, there are several slightly different versions of the music for our show.

The version of the lyrics and music that we are using is the MTI libretto that was distributed to the cast.
Questions on discrepancies should be directed to Peter.
Audition
will consist of one unaccompanied prepared piece (or a part of a piece)
no longer than 3 minutes. It does not need to be your most challenging
work or technically difficult. Be prepared for some unaccompanied
sight reading from the Les Miz score.

The Rehearsal Schedule page now shows the schedule for the current month, in addition to providing a link to download or view the entire 17-page masterpiece.

As many have already done, please post your schedule conflicts from the Bulletin Board page.

All cast members should be practicing their music at home, as much as possible. Sing along with the show recordings available on-line or with the CD. Also- familiarize yourselves with the full story. Get the Cliff Notes, read the Wikipedia for Les Mis and Victor Hugo, listen to the audiobook (free). Definitely watch the movie versions and consider going to the touring production at Sacramento Community Center next month.

While you may be familiar with the Broadway cast recording, it will make our show so much richer if everyone is familiar with the history and purpose of Hugo's writing.

Thanks to everyone for your commitment to the best production possible!Peter and Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07566442277096723222noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1039364854227956698.post-68494566445304672182013-05-07T17:03:00.001-07:002013-05-08T13:13:53.425-07:00Errors CorrectedLOOK DOWN, LOOK DOWN

Apologies to those who were inadvertently omitted from the Cast List that was originally published here.
It was strictly a typing error! Keep breathing, and yes, we are thrilled to be working with Everyone!

Due to an alert reader, a schedule error was noted:

for August 22, rehearsal groups required are (21) and (23) - instead of (21) and (22)

The Cast/Crew and Family Party is Sunday June 9th, instead of Saturday, June 8th.

Also, on the rehearsal calendar, "SM" means Stage Manager, who is Dan Snow!

We will be correcting these errors to the on-line calendar this week.
AT THE END OF THE DAY, Thank you for your patience and understanding. Casting for Les Miserables at Imagination Theater

Remember that the show is a
complete “sing through.” There is no
spoken dialog. The cast of Les
Miserables will be living in an alternate universe where singing is the
primary means of vocal communication rather than speech. The show is not a typical musical where the
characters speak between musical numbers as a lead-in to the musical
numbers. Much like an opera, everyone
the audience sees will be singing… advancing the plot lines in song with
characterization, blocking, business, and movement. This type of staging will be challenging yet
provides an opportunity to push creative and performance boundaries. Every
role will be demanding, require full character development and regular vocal
practice.

There are many roles to be filled
to be able to perform Les Miserables
with the richness, and “reverence” that this legendary production
requires.

Adult Themes

Victor Hugo wrote this saga with
the intention of bringing the plight of France’s poor in the early 1800’s to
the attention of the world. Even though
there are dark moments in the show that deal with abuse, violence, the
hardships of life on the streets, poverty, abandonment and despair, we will
present Les Miserables with our usual
commitment to the physical and emotional safety of and respect for the show’s
participants. The story will be
discussed and explained at length with the cast in initial rehearsals. Violent and suggestive situations on stage
will be handled with appropriate discretion.
We plan to coordinate group rehearsals to isolate our younger members
from as much of the performance of difficult material as possible. Naturally, we look to parents of younger cast
members to be responsible for dealing with sensitive themes with their
children!

A Unique Opportunity

It is quite probable that Les Miserables will only be available
for performance by community theaters for a very short time before it is again
restricted. For most of us, irrespective
of age, this is likely the only opportunity we will have to be involved in this
epic show, the most successful musical of all time.

We suggest that you fully commit yourself
to being part of the show no matter what role you play. We are certain that opening night will be
powerful for the whole the cast and audience of Les Miserables at Imagination Theater!
